Tunes & Tales: Donna Herula, Nikki O’Neill & Ashley & Simpson

Tunes & Tales is a songwriter-in-the-round series at the Two Way Street Coffee House, hosted by Ashley & Simpson—directors of the venue and songwriters who perform together as a folk duo.

Each session brings Ashley & Simpson together with two guest songwriters for an intimate afternoon of music and storytelling. In this cozy setting, the artists take turns sharing their songs, the stories behind them, and a closer look at where those songs came from.

For our September edition, Ashley & Simpson welcome Donna Herula and Nikki O’Neill for an afternoon that brings together blues, Americana, soul, folk, and plenty of great songwriting.

Chicago blues artist Donna Herula is an acclaimed singer, songwriter, guitarist, and slide guitar player whose music is rooted in traditional blues while drawing from folk, country, and Americana influences. Her expressive playing and deeply felt songwriting make her a natural storyteller both in song and on stage.

Americana artist Nikki O’Neill pairs her love of classic soul with thoughtful, hopeful songwriting and a voice that can move from subtle and intimate to full-throated soul. Her critically acclaimed third album, Stories I Only Tell My Friends, showcases her songwriting alongside her five-piece band and was voted one of Americana Highways readers’ Top 10 favorite albums in March 2025. Nikki was also selected as a 2025 Illinois Arts Council grant recipient.

Hosts Ashley & Simpson—Jennifer Ashley and Joel Simpson—bring their own blend of traditional folk, original songwriting, close vocal harmonies, and influences ranging from classical music to jazz and popular song.

Tunes & Tales isn’t simply about hearing the songs. It’s a chance to get to know the people who write them, hear the stories that inspired them, and experience the music in a whole new way.
